Cycle of International Conferences

Interview
M. Stéphane POUFFARY, Scientific Committee President

ADEME

"The second ENERGAÏA edition and its associated conferences cycle will be launched in a couple of months. Strengthened by the success of the first edition, our previous partnerships have been confirmed and enriched and, event if it not possible here to give an exhaustive list, we can clearly say that ENERGAÏA has became a favourite exchanges platform between European “territories” representatives and the building, construction and renewable energies’ sectors professionals, without forgetting a confirmed open window on the euro Mediterranean Region. This affirmation reflects the association to this event of numerous international, European and national networks. These networks have decided to share together a discussion on common interest concerns as energy demand management, renewable energies development and even building and planning’s challenges in a sustainable territories’ prospect without forgetting financing and training concerns.

This second edition’s conference theme has been decided with this state of mind:
2020 objective: territories and regions’ stakes and role facing tomorrow’s urban challenge. The importance of energy demand management and renewable energies’ development”.

The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) is supporting ENERGAÏA’S International Conference

The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) functions as a reference centre of science and technology for the EU. Essentially, its role is to provide other European Commission Services, EU Institutions and Member States with the independent research and foresight they need for policy-making in many areas, including energy and nuclear research. With seven research institutes spread across Europe, the JRC is able to provide support covering the entire policy cycle or parts of it: anticipating needs, assessing policy options and their impact, monitoring and contributing to their implementation and evaluate their results.

The JRC will give insight into some of its areas of expertise in the field of energy during the its ENERGAIA conference : "A European contribution to low carbon energy research: a special focus on the activities of the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC)”.

NEWS FROM THE PARTNERS

THE “ECO MAIRES” ASSOCIATION (Eco Mayors)

ENERGAÏA and the “Eco Maires” reward towns which hold an exemplary record in terms of energy and sustainable development
Each year the "Eco Maires" association holds a national Eco Actions award to honour the most outstanding cities and councils for innovative initiatives and successful projects with regards to the environment and sustainable development. The prizes are allocated according to criteria of innovation, prevention and cooperation and are awarded by a jury composed of parliamentarians, presidents of national associations, local elected officials, public (ADEME etc.) and private partners. Awards are given at a special ceremony at the National Assembly parliament.

This year the energy theme will be especially important. A prize ceremony for the winning city will this year be held at the ENERGAÏA exhibition, on Wednesday 10th December 2008. Local authorities will be running in the following categories: the Eco Actions trophies plus a series of special prizes (Democratic Youth Prize, Young Researcher Prize, Business Incubator Prize, Environment Magazine Prize and the Territoria Prize).

Interview
Guy GEOFFROY,
President of the “Eco Maires” association
Mayor of Combs-la-Ville, Member of Parliament for the Seine et Marne

What are the aims of the "Eco Maires" association?
When it was created 20 years ago, the association provided support for mayors who wanted to launch a sustainable development approach in their communes.
Over the years, a veritable know-how has developed and a different approach is coming to the fore. Today, we serve our members both as a resource centre for sharing knowledge and best practices, and as a laboratory of ideas for testing what is happening elsewhere in Europe. We also serve as a spokesperson for elected officials to anticipate legal and regulatory changes and ensure that these correspond to council members’ requirements.

What are the main issues for the "Eco Maires" in the months to come?
There are many! However, to summarise, the association will launch three major projects: the debates on the BORLOO laws and the “Grenelle de l’Environnement” agreements regarding eco-neighborhoods, where, after having initiated a methodology on this subject three years ago, we will be accompanying the deployment of these laws and agreements in many local authorities and with even greater intensity given the rising prominence of waste management and questions of recycling. We will naturally continue the projects we have been working on for several years now with regards to industrial risk, public procurement and nutrition and environmental education programmes in schools. "Eco Maires" also represents a vast network of elected officials with a rich level of information exchange aimed at providing direct links for all the different stakeholders. Today, we observe a high level of drive in this sector amongst elected officials who want both to take action but also evaluate the efficacy of their initiatives and their use of public finances. The role of our association is to support these officials and ensure they are provided with the best and most innovative tools and the benefit of experience from lessons learned.

"Eco Maires" are partners of ENERGAÏA 2008, how do you perceive this participation?
The energy dimension is an essential element in any local authority project, notably in an international context where raw material price increases and the diminishing availability of natural resources mean that any public project must be considered not only in terms of its financial cost but also its ecological cost. It is essential as far as risk is concerned, just as for other environmental issues, to have a coherent approach between players (politicians, government, associations and industries) who share the same economic and ecological environment. "Eco Maires" offer a platform for exchange through regular meetings which bring stakeholders from all sectors to the same table. It is our aim to participate regularly in debates and meetings.

ENERPLAN (Association for Solar Energy Professionals)

 GENESOL

GENESOL is preparing for sustained development!
In order to meet growing demand, GENESOL is securing its supply chain with regards to its residential activity in the Languedoc-Roussillon through the signature of a two year purchasing contract for polycrystalline modules with the Spanish company Siliken (modules assembled using cells from the German company Q-Cells, world number one). This contract represents a minimum of 875kWc of modules to be delivered between mid 2008 and the end of 2010. It will enable GENESOL to offer its clients secured access to very high quality photovoltaic modules which are manufactured just a few hundred kilometres from their final place of use. The end of the year will see the completion of several major industrial and agricultural projects which will be the forerunners for further significant development in this sector of activity from 2009 onwards. In order to respond to this evolution, GENESOL is building up its teams of project managers and installation technicians and is doubling its warehouse storage capacity. More +...

 AEHLIOS

A second technical centre for managing solar installations in the Languedoc-Roussillon
In order to support its fast growing activities and to guarantee a local level of service for its clients, Aehlios, specialized in solar roofing for private homes, is setting up a second technical centre in the Languedoc Roussillon. This centre will be based in Narbonne and will cover private and professional construction projects in the Aude, the Ariège, the Pyrénées Orientales and the Tarn. It will consolidate the initial Montpellier based centre which will be able to focus on the departments of Hérault, Gard, Lozère, Aveyron and Vaucluse.

 CIEL ET TERRE

Commissioning of a photovoltaic power generator in Avignon
Ciel et Terre has installed a photovoltaic power generation unit at the ‘Les Fenaisons’ residence with a power generation level of 76kWc. The installation meets the architectural integration criteria and will produce the equivalent of 29% of the electricity consumed by the residents (not including heating), which represents three times the electricity consumed for lighting, for example. This pilot project will enable an annual saving of some 123 tonnes of CO2 (the equivalent in emissions of 61 cars). Ciel et Terre is specialised in large scale ground based and integrated roof based solar systems (>1000m²) and is developing its turnkey solutions. Ciel et Terre is building up its financial base and operates its own photovoltaic power stations. Its total installations in will represent 600kWc in 2008 and 4.2 MW in 2009 (France and Reunion Island). More +...

DAO&CO...

Innovation in landscape integration of new energies
Today, thanks to new techniques (video and 3D), video-assembly software can be used to improve the future integration of a project into its environment. The view returned of the future installation is no longer static but dynamic (wind turbines in movement can be viewed on a panoramic basis with the real landscape in the background). The landscaping element is extremely important for upstream project management and such techniques can offer local authorities and the general public a new point of view about such projects.
